Introduction of currency is a hostile act intended to destroy the economy of South Sudan

JUBA (25 Jul) - Khartoum’s introduction of its new currency, just a week after South Sudan introduced its own new currency is a violation, Secretary General of the Sudan Peoples’ Liberation Movement (SPLM) and South Sudan’s Minister for Peace and CPA Implementation Cde. Pagan Amum told reporters yesterday in Juba.

According to Secretary General of the SPLM, the introduction is intended to destroy the economy of South Sudan, an act he described as hostile.

He went on to refute claims made by Khartoum that South Sudan did not inform them about the introduction of the South Sudanese Pound.

He said an agreement was reached in January that stipulated South Sudan to introduce its new currency while the old Sudanese Pound (SDG) would remain in circulation in the North.

“This is a hostile act that the Republic South Sudan has suffered in the hands of the Republic of Sudan. It wants to destroy the economy of South Sudan by making the new country lose nearly 700 million USD,” he said.

This, according to the minister, is contrary to, and against all aspirations and expectations that the two nations were going to emerge as two independent countries that will be good neighbors cooperating in the best interests of both nations.
