Post-independence talks between Juba and Khartoum set to resume in Addis Ababa
JUBA (25 Jul) - Post-independence talks between the Republic of South Sudan and Republic of Sudan are set to resume this Friday in Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia, Cde. Pagan Amum, South Sudan’s minister for Peace and CPA Implementation told reporters Monday during a press conference in Juba.
The talks under the auspices of the African Union High Implementation Panel (AUHIP) on Sudan were called off shortly before the declaration of South Sudan’s independence. They are set to resume on the 29th and will be presided by former president of South Africa Thabo Mbeki.
Mr. Mbeki is expected to visit Juba on Sunday to discuss the agenda of the resumption of talks with the Government of the new Republic of South Sudan.
On July 09 2011, South Sudan celebrated its independence from the North after 21 years of armed struggle. In 2005, a Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) was signed between the SPLM and the Government of Sudan that gave South Sudanese the right to decide in a referendum whether to be part of Sudan or split an become independent. 99% of South Sudanese voted for secession during the referendum that legitimized the independence on 09 July 2011.
